More than 700 people have committed suicide for Telangana since December 2009 when Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram announced the creation of the separate state and then reneged on the promise.
According to the Telangana Development Forum, Andhra Pradesh has witnessed more than 613 suicides by persons wanting the creation of a separate state. When contacted, officials of the Andhra Pradesh police said that they were unable to specify how many people had committed suicide.
The maximum number of deaths have been reported from Karimnagar district (183), followed by Warangal (153). Medak, the parliamentary seat of Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader M.V. Shanthi is next on list with 69 suicides.
These suicides have not stayed confined to the rural areas. They have taken place in urban areas as well. Recently, a 27-year-old man from Medak district, an ITI graduate, committed suicide by self-immolation. Sai Kumar, 20, who was a final year engineering student with Osmania University, ended his life by hanging himself. In his suicide note he wrote that he had lost faith in the leaders of Telangana and asked his fellow students to lead the agitation to success. Sunil, a journalist working with a local newspaper in Warangal, hanged himself to death last year upset with the Central government's apathy on the issue.
If Professor Sridhar Swami, a former Osmania University faculty member and president of the Telangana Citizens' Association, has to be believed, these suicides have not been highlighted by the AP media because it was controlled by pro-Andhra professionals.
"A resident of Telangana is appalled by the plunder of revenue, water, jobs and precious resources by the people of Andhra and their politicians," said Dr Shaik Khaleel Rehman of the Jai Telangana Forum, a body that includes intellectuals and academicians and has been in the forefront in highlighting the problems of the region.
"Why hasn't there been a single fact-finding mission to look into these deaths?" asked Rehman. Supporters of Telangana say that unless and until a separate Telangana is created, suicides will continue.
