MIDNAPORE/KOLKATA: Top Maoist Leader Kishanji alias Mallojula Koteshwar Rao is believed to have been killed in a joint operation by the CRPF and West Bengal Police in West Midnapore on Thursday dated as 24-Nov-2011afternoon.
Kishanji was killed in a gun battle deep inside the dense Burishole forest of west midnapore. The gun battle waged for a few hours between a fairly big gang of maoist and some 200 plus personnel of the 207 Cobra Battalion and 184 CRPF Left a dead body among others, who had an AK-47 beside it and hearing aid
The operation that netted Kishanji, who has repeatedly eluded such dragnets in the past three years, began on Tuesday night. It culminated in one of the biggest and fiercest battles in Jangalmahal with some 500 CRPF jawans and anti-Naxal commandos, backed by local cops, taking on 150-odd Maoist guerrillas. Thousands of rounds were fired in the Kushboni jungle in Jhargram, 200km west of Kolkata.
Kishanji is belongs to Peddapally area in Karimnagar District in Andhra Pradesh State. But he was looking after the Maoist Operations in the Eastern Region, and is believed to be number 3 in the Outfit's hierarchy after General Secretary Ganapathi alias Mupalla Laxman Rao and Kishenda alias Prashanth Bose. He was one of the eight members of Maoist polit bureau and also part of its 23-members of Central Committee.
"Our men on the ground are sure the body is that of Kishanji, But the state police has called in some Locals to conclusively identify the body," CRPF Director General K Vijay Kumar told to ET in New Delhi. " Most likely it is Kishanji, The officers on the spot said it is kishanji most likely 99% it is Kishanji" said Union Home Secretary R K Singh. " We have said we have to be certain before we declare." Two bengal officers who have seen his recent photos, were in the operation.
