UPA Coordination Committee Meeting on Telangana

The Congress-led UPA Government would hold its coordination
committee meeting here on July 31 to take a decision on the contentious Telangana statehood, even as main Opposition BJP wanted a separate state carved out of Andhra Pradesh expeditiously.
Amidst indications that the statehood for Telangana was a fait accompli for the UPA Government at the Centre now, the alliance has called for the coordination meeting to finalise its common view on the issue.
A Congress Working Committee meeting is also scheduled after the UPA meeting, sources said here.
However, the likelihood of a separate Telangana state has caused a lot of heartburn among Andhra Pradesh’s Congress leaders from the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, with members of Parliament from both areas vehemently opposed to a division of the present state.
Anti-Telangana MPs such as Union Ministers M M Pallam Raju, K S Rao, Chiranjeevi and D Purandeshwari (all hailing from coastal Andhra) and K Bapiraju and Anantarami Reddy had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a delegation recently to push for keeping Andhra Pradesh united. However, within the Congress, the MPs from Telangana have favoured statehood to the region and have indicated that not giving in to the overwhelming sentiment would result in an electoral backlash for the party in future as 10 districts of the region send 17 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
The BJP extended its full support for Telangana formation, with party chief Rajnath Singh informing reporters on the sidelines of the BJP SC Morcha National Executive Committee meeting here that the party was fully committed to the separate statehood demand.
“We support Telangana cause. The BJP is committed to form the state. The government should grant it immediately,” Rajnath said.
“Telangana statehood will become a reality if the BJP comes to power at the Centre after the general elections,” he added.  The BJP  had earlier accused the ruling party of dilly-dallying on the matter.
